Stephanie's Running Story

Stephanie decided that 2023 would be the year she’d run - a lot - for Schnauzerferst. Here she tells us why.

I’m a 41 year old, mum of 2 young children and married to David. I have also been mummy to my schnauzers Missy and Mojo. Missy is now 11 years old but unfortunately Mojo passed away in 2021 at ten. My love for schnauzers really started through my mother in-law, Julia. At one point between us we had a family of 5 schnauzers.

My working life has been within social care in a variety of settings, mainly within mental health services. In 2020 I started my social work degree and I’m now qualified as a social worker and work within adult social care.

I love being outdoors and seeing all animals, especially dogs, living their best life.

Why have you chosen to run for schnauzerfest?

I have always supported Schnauzerfest from when it first started.  When I completed my Social Work degree in 2022 I compiled a list of things that I wanted to do with my spare time. I knew I wanted to challenge myself further in running and what better motivation is there? Schnauzerfest is enshrined with dogs being free to walk, play, sniff and run. Seeing all the dogs helped by the charity brings a smile to me. A smile is priceless.

What does the charity mean to you?

Over the years, I have learned so much about dogs and the awful nature of puppy farming from Schnauzerfest. My eyes have been opened and this in turn has helped others who have approached me for advice before getting a dog. I love being part of this special community, joining local schnauzer walks and making new friends.

TELL US ABOUT THE INCREDIBLE CHALLENGE YOU ARE DOING

In 2020 I found myself working, studying and home schooling during the pandemic. Even dog walking wasn’t done alone as I needed to get the kids out of the house. I‘ve always enjoyed fitness but I started running in late 2021 as friends encouraged me. I never thought I would like running but soon found that I loved it. The freedom of being out, alone, has enormous benefits to my mental health and running provides me with the physical challenge I like.

I am running one race a month which is a variety of 10k, 10 miles and half marathons. My plan is to use this opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Schnauzerfest.

Dates that I have confirmed so far:

Valentine’s 10K 12/02: COMPLETED ✔️

Blickling Spring Half Marathon 19/03

Trowse 10K 09/04

Dereham 10miles 14/05/23

Run Norwich 10K 16/07

As entries open, I will be adding to the list. I’m covering all entry fees and am delighted that people are generously supporting my fundraising.
