A Sunday morning email came in recently asking for our help. A terminally ill owner could no longer care for his elderly schnauzer. Saffron herself was struggling with health issues and the family were desperate to find a place of safety for her knowing their own circumstances were impossible. Time was of the essence as the poor man saw the only solution was to have her put to sleep the next day. A truly sad mix of problems, illness and desperation were all compounded by being in lockdown due to Covid-19.
Using our network of rescue contacts and professionals, by mid morning we’d managed to secure a place for Saffron within a reasonable travelling distance. Not only was the rescue able to take her immediately, which brought swift relief to her family, RSPCA Radcliffe has an onsite veterinary clinic. This meant that Saffron’s medical needs would be investigated and taken care of without further delay or disturbance.
Sadly, a scan identified that Saffron has a liver tumour. She is being fostered with one of the centre’s experienced volunteers and has started medication to keep things under control for as long as possible. She is in capable, loving hands for the rest of her life. How long that will be is unknown, but each day is always a precious one, especially for elderly dogs.
RSPCA Radcliffe is an independent Trust, managed and financed separately to the national RSPCA.
