When Stevie was accepted into rescue at just a few weeks old it was obvious that something was seriously wrong with his eyes.
Angel Small Paws Rescue quickly arranged for a specialist ophthalmology appointment. Sadly this revealed that Stevie was born with a condition which cannot be fixed. The better news is that he does have some vision, albeit limited and this should remain stable for the rest of his life. As a dog born with limited eyesight Stevie will never know any different and will grow up to be a perfectly well adjusted and happily capable dog. Especially as he has been adopted by an experienced schnauzer owner and long term friend and supporter of Schnauzerfest, Lorna.
Stevie joins Lorna’s miniature schnauzers Louis and Dotty and we caught up with her to discover how Stevie is settling in.
Lorna,
It’s going really well. He's so good, already clean at night, playful and confident. He loves his food and is growing well. Louis has been fabulous, calm and gentle and Stevie watches him to see what to do. Dotty is very lovely too, a livelier character who charms everyone, especially people. I can see her and Stevie being happy playmates when he is bigger.
I always wanted to adopt. Now, as Louis is the ideal dog to show a new dog the way, it's almost as if he was made for it. My sister rescued a cavalier called Nelly who had been used for breeding for 3 years and straight away she felt safe with Louis. Louis will soon be 12 and had a cancerous lump removed in May which was successful with no further treatment required. But I had to face the fact, and it breaks my heart, that he won't be here forever.
Stevie makes me laugh daily as I have never seen a dog so excited at meal times. He is a bright boy and copes very well with his limited eyesight. He doesn't like to be too far away from me or one of the dogs when he is exploring. He is already part of the family and is hoping to join a Schnauzer walk soon in his sling. Thank you for the help Schnauzerfest has given Stevie, we really appreciate it.
